Brussels Sprouts and Bacon

I have been a huge opponent of the Brussels sprout for most of my life and Julie definitely has much disdain for these little critters. However, they are extremely healthy for you so while I was at my local Sprouts I ran across these organic versions that were massive. They looked great so I figured I would give them another try. I used Sarah Fragoso’s recipe from her book “Everyday Paleo“… page 147.

On the geeky nutrition side of things, Brussels sprouts contains sulforaphane, a chemical believed to have potent anticancer properties. The are also a good source of indole-3-carbinol, a chemical which boosts DNA repair. Bonus!

The recipe is extremely simple and easy to make. The results? Amazing! Sarah is right… given the right recipe these little guys are scrumptious!

A little steam…

A little heat…

And a little tummy time…

Zeo Sleep Manager (for iPhone)

The Paleo Solution Podcast by Robb Wolf and Greg Everett has really opened my eyes (or, more accurately… shut them) to the extreme importance of good sleep (among a billion other things as well). But how do you really know what quality of sleep you’re getting? You’re asleep so it’s not like you can step outside your body and watch exactly what’s going on inside your brain bucket.

However, a new product by a company named Zeo has a couple of products that might interest you. We’re a fairly “Apple-heavy” family… iPads, iTouches, iPhones, MacBook Pro, so I was excited to see Zeo’s latest product… the Zeo Sleep Manager Mobile. For the low low price of $99 USD, you get a nice little bluetooth-ready headband (and a charging dock) that you wear while sleeping. The headband transmits over bluetooth to your iPhone or iWhatever and collects all of your sleep data. The next day it will show you all kinds of tidbits about your sleep as well as upload the data to their server.

NOTE: These are all screen shots from my iPhone 4S.

Here is the main screen after a night’s sleep. You can see your overall “ZQ” score and a brief summary of time I spent in Deep sleep, REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep, Light sleep, the amount of time I was awake, and the total sleep duration.

This is just a break down of the same information… with nice little bars in addition to the actual values.

Here is a breakdown of the entire night in 5-minute intervals… for all the anal-retentive/OCD people who want to know exactly what was going on every five minutes. Eh, it’s cool to see.

This shot is a screen that shows a summary of all of your nights. It’s basically a scrollable list that you can spin through quickly.

If you really want to get geeky you can create an account online with the MyZeo site and your phone will automatically upload the data to that account. You can log into the website and look over the data as well as link that data to other sites such as DailyBurn.com to have your sleep data automatically “pushed” to that account. Again with the OCD!

I’ve had a great time using the product and I definitely can see a difference in my sleep patterns when I’ve had that extra four glasses of wine or the kiddos aren’t sleeping as well as Julie and I would like. And for $99 it’s a nice investment in your health… I think. Give it a shot if you feel so inclined.

Why We Get Fat – Gary Taubes

Gary Taubes is a very well-respected Journalist who has been researching nutrition for a very long time. He’s no dummy and takes a very scientific, and open-minded, approach to analyzing all the data available back to the stone age to determine what makes us fat. So what does the real data say? Bluntly, it says that carbohydrates and carbohydrates alone cause us to store fat. Eating fats and proteins have absolutely nothing to do with it. The (very extensive) data is invariably irrefutable should anyone truly want to know what the data shows. Continue Reading →

Our Top Fitness/Health iPhone Apps

There are people who like to just workout and people who like to document things. I’m definitely one of those who falls into the camp of people who write stuff down. It’s probably because I have a poor memory. Then again, it is much more likely a factor of OCD than anything else. Here are our current favorite fitness and health related iPhone applications. Enjoy! Olympic Weightlifting: A Complete Guide for Athletes & Coaches + DVD

I have always been impressed and somewhat inspired by strong men and Olympic weight lifters. They are, or seem to be, super-human. While I have absolutely no aspirations of being a competitive Olympic weightlifter, I would really love to learn about the sport, the theories, and the training exercises so that I can apply them, in an extremely limited fashion, to my own life. Having two herniated and desiccated vertebral discs between L3 and L5 that are constantly “keeping me down”, I am extremely careful with lifts and concentrate on keeping my core muscles strengthened so they can handle the pressures instead of passing those on to my spine. And since you asked, yes, I did damage those discs by doing way too much long-distance running! Continue Reading →

Healthy Intestines = Healthy Brain

According to a recent study out of University College Cork in Cork, Ireland, good digestive health may help to regulate and reduce stress in the brain. The study looked at how probiotics affect the brain. They found that the presence of this bacteria, L. rhamnosus, in the gut altered behaviors relevant to anxiety and depression. Continue Reading →

Slummin’ It In The Workplace

Sometimes there just isn’t enough time or, honestly, because I’m lazy and don’t end up making my lunch to take to work. On those days, I’ve got to either starve (not good) or “overcome and adapt”. The latter is usually accomplished in a half-ass fashion because I have to either go somewhere for fast food (read: culinary disaster) or each in the work cafe. Continue Reading →

Kamryn’s Supergirl Costume

To anyone who knows us, it comes as no surprise that we love Halloween. Being Baptist, we are constantly hearing all about how “bad” Halloween is and how we are worshiping Satan. Get a grip, come back down to reality, take a big deep breath, and try to enjoy life. To us, Halloween is nothing more than a fun little holiday that allows us to be creative, dress up in some sort of fun/silly costumes, and to laugh with friends and family. Nothing more, nothing less. Ok, enough with the diatribe. Continue Reading →

Aw, Julie does love me!

I skipped my workout this morning and “slept in” to around 7:30-ish. By the time I was ready to leave for work, it was almost 8:00 and I knew there was no way I was going to make something decent to eat before making the hour-long trek to work (thank God for Robb & Greg’s podcasts!). Thankfully, I am pleasantly surprised to run into this as I entered the kitchen… Continue Reading →
